This Sunshine in a Jar craft is bright and cheery. It reminds me of the power of hope.
Have you ever been through a difficult time in your life when you desperately clung to hope? I think most of us have. For me, the most difficult season of life was several years ago. My husband was very sick, barely able to get out of bed – and not just for a couple of days or a week – it lasted nearly two months. I did my best to care for him, keep up with our five-year-old son, and maintain the house, all while being eight months pregnant!
I didn’t get out of the house much… wouldn’t get out of the house much. I was afraid to leave in case my husband needed something… or in case he got worse. It was a hard time for us. I never knew what each day would hold. I hoped, and I prayed, and the days dragged on.
During that time I found myself craving sunlight. Every afternoon I would brew a cup of tea and sit in the sun on our porch. The sun’s warmth felt good on my skin. I took in the beauty of the flowers in the garden. I listened to the song of the birds in the trees. And for a short while, I was reminded that the earth was still turning and time was moving forward as it always had. It was refreshing and grounding for me. Somehow, it gave me hope that this trying season in our lives would pass.
Nights were hard. I would put my five-year-old to bed, check on my husband one last time before he went to sleep, and then I was alone with my thoughts. All of the things that kept me busy during the day were done. There were no distractions to keep the “what ifs” out of my mind. At night, surrounded by darkness, I needed something to keep me from plunging into despair. Scripture gave me the hope I was desperately seeking.
I have a small notebook that I keep for writing down inspiring Bible verses. Almost every night I would take it out and read it cover to cover. As I read I was reminded that I was not going through these trials alone. God was with me. The scriptures gave me strength, courage, and peace.
When I created Sunshine in a Jar, it reminded me of those difficult weeks, but not in a bad way. It reminded me of the warmth and light of the sun and the hope and peace that come from the Son.

“The light is pleasant, and it is good for the eyes to see the sun. Indeed, if a man should live many years, let him rejoice in them all, and let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many.“
Ecclesiastes 11:7-8
