*** Thousands of infants and children have ended up in the hospital after ingesting water beads and many retailers are no longer selling them. I have removed my water bead product links out of an abundance of caution. ***
I have made a few water bead sensory bottles, and they are super fun. It’s really neat that the contents appear to be suspended inside, and it’s great that I can use them as decor around my home. The limiting factor to making them has always been the size of the opening in the bottle. I wanted to make one with snowmen inside and I found some really cute snowmen at Hobby Lobby, but they were too big to fit inside the bottles I usually use. Then I had the idea of using a mason jar.
When I went to the store to buy a few jars, I couldn’t find any plain ones in the 16oz size, so I ended up getting swirly ones, hoping they would look good. My plan was to use some white tinsel pom poms in the bottom of the jar to look like snow, then place the snowmen on top of the pom poms and surround them with clear water beads. Then I would add some cute little snowflake buttons as I filled the rest of the jar up with clear water beads. I feel like using a mixture of different craft items makes things more interesting.
There was a small amount of prep work to do before putting everything in the mason jar. The little snowman figures I got from Hobby Lobby were ornaments, so I used some pliers to pull out the metal eye hooks. (If I left them on, they would have rusted in the water.) I used wire cutters to cut the shanks off of the snowflake buttons and hydrated the water beads.
Next, I put the white tinsel pom poms in the bottom of the mason jar, covering it. I added some hydrated clear water beads, then placed the snowmen, pushing them down so that they were sitting on top of the pom poms with the water beads holding them in place. Once I was satisfied with their placement, I added clear water beads to cover them, then began placing snowflakes here and there in the jar as I continued to fill it to the top with clear water beads. When the water beads reached the top of the jar, I filled it up with water and put on the lid. It looks so cute!
It really looked great with my sensory bottle light under it (see how I made it here), but the jar feels a bit unstable sitting on top. I will be researching a new light set up for mason jars, and will update this post once I get it figured out.
