I just survived my son’s play date. Four first grade boys running wild around my home. It was only for a few hours, but wow. Now my little one is napping and my six-year-old is watching a movie, so I get a little bit of time to myself. And what do I want to do? Write about autumn books!!
I love finding special ways to celebrate and enjoy each season, and I just opened up my “autumn” storage box this week. Leaves, pumpkins, acorns, scarecrows, candles… and books! It was hard for me to not sit down with the kids and read them all at once. Not that it would be a bad thing, but I want to savor them. We will read each of them multiple times, I’m sure.

The Fantastic Gifts of Fall
By Dandi Daley Mackall
Illustrated by Katherine Blackmore
Dandi Daley Mackall’s books about the seasons are wonderful. In The Fantastic Gifts of Fall, each page has a short rhyme about the fun that autumn brings as well as a verse from the Bible. The cute illustrations show kids enjoying the season. I love the rhythm and the way the book highlights thankfulness.
The Pumpkin Patch Parable
Liz Curtis Higgs
Illustrated by Nancy Munger
Liz Curtis Higgs also has a series that goes along well with the seasons. I bring out The Pumpkin Patch Parable every autumn. The story is about a farmer who harvests a pumpkin and transforms it so that it can share light with the world – the same way God changes people and puts His light in us. It is a great story to read while carving pumpkins each year, and gives the old tradition a whole new feel.
God Gave Us Thankful Hearts
Lisa Tawn Bergren
Illustrated by David Holm
In this story, Little Pup is feeling down about the change in seasons, but his Mama and Papa help him to focus on the good things. Little Pup learns that he can be thankful for something in every season. It’s a great lesson, not just for the seasons of the year, but for our seasons of life as well.
Bear Says Thanks
Karma Wilson
Illustrated by Jane Chapman
The Bear Books by Karma Wilson are some of my very favorite. They all have great rhymes and sweet pictures. In this book, bear’s friends all create a fantastic feast. Even though Bear doesn’t have any food to contribute, his friends help him to realize that he has something else he can share. Just like all of the Bear Books, this one is a beautiful example of friendship and caring for one another.
