Bible Verses For Overcoming Anxiety

Anxiety is a part of life. We all have worries. For many people these feelings are temporary, but for some of us it can be an everyday struggle.

I have suffered from anxiety for over a decade now and I have been through some really tough seasons in my life. Who knew anxiety could be so debilitating? And so exhausting?

Several years ago I came across Philippians 4:6-7 while reading the Bible.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

God doesn’t want us to be anxious. He wants us to trust in Him while he provides unfathomable peace. Wow! I decided to memorize the verse and recite it to myself any time I started feeling anxious or worried. Not only that, but I also decided to DO what the verse was telling me to do.

If I felt anxiety creeping in, I prayed. I talked to God about what was making me anxious, I thanked Him for allowing the struggles in my life to strengthen me, and I asked Him to meet my needs. Then I waited for Him to fill me with peace.

It was hard to remember to pray every time, but the more I practiced, the easier it got. These days, I still feel a sense of amazement when I experience peace in the midst of chaos.

As an avid Bible reader, I made a notebook with tons of verses that help in the battle to overcome anxiety. Here are some of my favorites. I hope they help you, too!

Bible Verses For Overcoming Anxiety

Mark 5:36 – But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid any longer, only believe.”

Matthew 6:31-33 – Do not worry then, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear for clothing?” For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

1 Peter 5:6-7 – Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

Isaiah 35:4 – Say to those with anxious heart, “Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; the recompense of God will come, but He will save you.”

Isaiah 41:10 – “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Romans 8:31 – What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

Philippians 4:8-9 – Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Matthew 6:34 – “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Psalms 94:19 – When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, your consolations delight my soul.
